Healthy living tips for home and office

Hi, I’m Geydi Moreno Nuñez and I’m the owner of FinerStudio, a small yoga and Zumba studio in the Bronx. Today, I’m writing here on Aimee’s blog as a guest blogger to deliver some fitness tips from the point of view of sports professionals.

Majority of us spend over half of our day sitting in front of the computer: bad posture, not enough blood flow and a serious lack of energy. Despite all of that sitting, you still feel exhausted when you get home – so you often end up missing that exercise class you were planning to go to. If that sounds familiar, don’t worry! Here are some of my fitness tips and lifestyle advice that you can do from your home or the office.

Posture: If you have ever taken yoga classes before, you know that the emphasis is centered on posture and alignment. If you want to straighten out your spine, and help to increase the blood flow in your body, you can start with a few easy tricks:

When you’re sitting at the office – roll your shoulders back! Most of us are unaware of how hunched over we sit and walk. Bring your awareness to your shoulders while you’re sitting at the office. You want to roll your shoulders back and down and bring your head straight in line with your neck. This will release the tension off of your neck and elongate your spine. Improving your posture will help you to increase your blood flow – which will give you that much-needed energy boost during the day!

If you are someone who needs to stand for long periods at a time, make sure you take a soft bend at the knees. You don’t need to bend your knees fully, just soften them so you take some of the pressure off. By alleviating some of the pressure from your knees, you will find a better balance for your back. This will help you to decrease lower back pain, and make it easier for you to last on your feet for longer periods of time.

Stretch Daily: Never underestimate the power of a good stretch! Before you hop into the shower in the morning do a round of ten stretches. It won’t take you any longer than 10 minutes, and you will feel rejuvenated after. Take a moment while you are in bed to feel your body. Make a note about where you are feeling any stress or discomfort, and make sure you use a stretch that targets that specific area. Some classics that you should always include are: cat and cow stretch, two-knee twist, and downward facing dog.

Walking: A lot of people talk about Zumba classes – they are a dance inspired high calorie burning workout. Can’t find Zumba classes around you or don’t have time go to classes? Don’t worry, I will give you my tips for bringing the energy of Zumba into a busy work life. The number one consensus among our Zumba instructors at FinerStudio is simply, More walking! After every meal, try to get up and walk for 10-30 minutes. Even if you are sitting in the office, take at least 10 minutes after your lunch to get up and stretch your legs.

Walking after your meals is a great way to kick-start your metabolism. Plus, you will feel less fatigued – making for a more energetic day at work. Studies also show that doing light exercise a few hours before bed will help you to exhaust your extra energy and prepare you for a good night’s rest.

Hydrate: All of the fitness specialist’s at my studio agree on the power of hydration. Go buy yourself a good quality water bottle and start to drink! Drinking more water can help your skin to look less puffy, make you feel full longer, and prevent headaches. Water is a simple remedy to many common problems. It is very easy to sit and drink water all day. Plus, every time your water bottle is empty you have an excuse to get up and stretch your legs!

Adding these small adjustments into your life can have huge benefits. They won’t take a lot of time, but they will make you feel healthier and more energized. If you feel like hitting the gym is out of your reach right now, start with these tips in the home and office. Remember – healthy living is a lifestyle! Make sure that you incorporate these tips into your daily routine so that you can really feel their effects!
