Wheel Pose at Turks and Caicos

I’m not big on making new year’s resolutions because I prefer to make short-term and long-term goals throughout the year, but I know many of you do enjoy having a list of things to start fresh. So if you’re planning for 2017, you should include practicing yoga to your list! If you’re already a yogi but only practice a few times a month like me, your resolution could be to increase how often you do it to better reap the health benefits.

Not sure that yoga is right for you? Keep an open mind and don’t believe in the myths you hear. This versatile exercise is perfect for pretty much everyone, and will do wonders for your physical and mental health. Still not particularly convinced? Keep reading for some great reasons on why you should pick up yoga in 2017.

There Are So Many Different Types

There are lots of different types of yoga. And when I say lots I really mean it! So even if you try Hatha Yoga, for example, and find out that you don’t enjoy it, there are still numerous other types for you to try. Each type of yoga includes different poses and some are even practiced in unique environments. For instance, Bikram Yoga is always practiced in a hot sauna. The heat will be cranked up high to help you sweat and burn more calories! Thanks to all these different types of yoga, you will almost certainly find one that suits your style!

It’s A Great Introduction To Meditation

Breathing techniques are a large part of yoga. As you get into each pose, you will be expected to focus on your breathing and make sure that you are breathing correctly. These different breathing techniques are also widely used in meditation. So yoga is a great introduction to begin meditation, which is a great way to keep your mind healthy and banish stress (it just might change your life). You can find out more about breathing and meditation at this guide to white light meditation.

It’s A Total Body Workout

Looking to shed a few pounds in 2017? Well, yoga is a great way to get into shape. Even if you are a complete beginner, you will be able to adjust each pose to your level and still work out your whole body. Many people find that yoga keeps them incredibly supple and strong, myself included! Not only will you become more flexible, you’ll build up your muscles and get toned all over.

Your Sleep Will Improve

Many people find that their sleep patterns greatly improve once they start practicing yoga. Some studies show that this is likely because light physical activity during the day can help tire the body out before bed. Others believe the breathing and meditative techniques used in yoga can help to greatly relax the body and mind. Whatever the reason, you will certainly notice the benefits each night after doing some yoga.

Hope all of these are reasons to persuade you to give yoga a try in 2017 or amp up your practice in the coming year. Happy holidays, fitsters!
