Why Healthy Living Makes You Happier

There are lots of distractions in life to make it difficult to know what we want, but many of us can agree happiness is a top priority. Growing up in modern society has taught us to think material things and money equate to success and happiness, but this is not the case. Obtaining happiness is a much more complicated process, and living healthy is a key part of making it a reality.

In today’s post, I want to talk about why taking care of yourself can make you a happier person. This makes sense, but many of us still struggle to incorporate healthy living as a key part of our search for happiness.

Your Emotions and Health are Connected

When we feel low or depressed, our immune system becomes weakened, which makes us more prone to illnesses and negativity. However, when we feel high energy and optimistic, our immune system strengthens, making us feel stronger, healthier and happier.

Through exercising, we can increase our level of optimism and enthusiasm for life. If you know someone who frequently visits the gym, eats healthily and generally takes care of themselves, how often do you see them unhappy or unwell? Not often, right? This is no coincidence. Taking care of yourself physically means feeling better mentally and being happier.

By altering your emotions, you can create a “knock on” effect that can almost instantly make you feel happy. However, simply going out for a run isn’t going to automatically make you happier. You need to find something you enjoy and then incorporate it, along with a good diet, to see the effects this exercise can have on overall happiness.

You Feel More in Control

Eating and living healthy requires some work. Our fast-paced, on-the- go lifestyles make it easy to indulge in unhealthy practices we regret later. Making a commitment to being healthy will make you happier because it makes you take control of your life. Removing the chaos and owning your own decisions are big sources of happiness and come part and parcel with a healthy lifestyle.

Fortunately, there are lots of tools available to help you. For example, meal-planning apps with built-in shopping list features help keep you on track for happiness through healthy living.

One app I use is “Pepperplate.” This one-stop app allows you to scan the net for recipes and instantly import the ingredients required into a shopping list. I like to scan meal ideas while in the grocery store so that I can pick up what I need as I go. I do use a secure network in public, though, to protect the personal information stored on my phone. Pepperplate is free on iOS and Android devices.

Another tool I use isn’t physical and is actually more of a technique. Ten to twenty minutes of mindfulness meditation every morning improves my levels of patience and ability to deal with stressful situations. These moments of peace help guide me to good decisions and make me feel like I am in the driver’s seat of my life, leading me to be healthier and happier.

Being healthy means being in control, so however you do it, know that making the effort to live healthily is not only good for your physical well-being, but also your overall happiness.

You Learn to Love and Appreciate Yourself

Learning to love yourself through self-appreciation is a key step on the path to happiness. Without a solid foundation of self-appreciation and self-love, it’s difficult to feel the need to take care of yourself and to be happy.

Working on being healthy is a clear sign you love and care for yourself. The main benefits of all the work needed to be healthy are felt most in your feeling of self-worth.

Some people arrive at a place of self-love and appreciation through first starting to take care of their health, then noticing they feel happier. For me, it was the other way around, but whichever path you take, taking the time to be healthy will cause a change in how you think about yourself, which will make happiness that much more attainable.

Healthy habits, such as eating right and exercising, can drastically improve your chances of creating and maintaining happiness. If you’re feeling down, try out the methods and examples given in today’s article for a while, and see how these efforts translate into more happiness in your life.
