Ever since I ran my first 5k, I’ve been keeping up with running consistently. Who knew I could fall in love with an activity that I used to hate with a passion? Nowadays I try to get in at least 5 miles each week in between lifting and yoga.

I prefer running outdoors but I know a lot of people shy away from that in the summer (the heat is no joke and certainly feels like our bodies are working extra hard). Trust me, I’m one of those people who sweat profusely and turn beet red in the face when I run, so I know a thing or two about what that’s like. 1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Hydration is number one when it comes to summer running – before, during, and after! Bring a bottle with you or run along a route that you know has water fountains. Look out for signs of dehydration which include dizziness, nausea, and weakness in your muscles.

2. Choose your time wisely

Don’t run during the middle of the day when the sun is at its peak. Instead, go early morning or late evening when the temperature is cooler. You might even catch a sunrise or sunset perfect for the gram!

3. Clothing choice is key

Stick to light color clothing and breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics. Cotton, linen, or synthetic materials designed for fitness is best in the heat. Ummm… I just gave you another reason to stock up workout gear (you’re welcome). I also try to wear as little as possible, shorts and tank top is my usual go-to. If you’re comfortable in a simple sports bra or going topless, go for it! A visor or hat would be handy too if you’re into that sort of thing. I personally look awful in it so I opt out. 🙂

4. Gear up with comfort

Besides clothing choice, your other running gear have to beat the heat as well! I used to run with my iPhone ear buds and they would fall out of my ears while I’m running or I would have to turn my music down for fear of not being able to hear oncoming cars.
